Still Seeing Breen - take 3

I'm finally back in NY and getting back to a regular schedule again. My sleep pattern has been off quite a bit as of late, so I've been putting some of that time to productive use.

To that, I put together the high quality version of Still Seeing Breen - version 1.1 in WMV format. Actually, there's a few more tweaks to it since the low quality WMV, but nothing radical, so I left the version number the same (and updated the low quality as well). I had a number of requests for this version, so hopefully the wait was worth it.

Spoiler warning: this machinima music video contains spoiler footage of Half Life 2.

Still Seeing Breen:
WMV - 640 x 480 - 64mb
Still Seeing Breen: In addition to these versions, I was forced to consider one more format. This week saw the latest volley of the handheld media players - a huge salvo called the Sony PSP. I preordered mine back in January as I had been anticipating its release since playing with one at E3 last year. I can wax on about how great a little device it is, but there's plenty of sites/blogs doing that. Still, I'm in love with the damn thing, so I immediately created an MP4 for it.

Some PSP love for those who own:

    Still Seeing Breen:
    MP4 - 320 x 240 - 25mb

Ok, I'll be back in a day or so, with thoughts on some great new Machinima works I've come across (yes, I'll be finally covering something other than this vid). Huzzah!

Dude, i love breaking benjamin and hl2 is my favorite game, that video kicked my ass. The way you got the G-man to go with the song was a mazing and the segemnts of video are all perfectly placed within the song. You're the man.

OK, it was very f*cking cool - BUT, it was slightly funny to think of the G-Man, being the character he is, singing. As cool as this thing was over all, there is just something a little weird about the G-Man singing, especially with a song where the singer is, well, singing out loud, almost operatically - anyway, if anyone knows the song "Counting Bodies Like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums" by A Perfect Circle, from the album eMOTIVe, I think you'll realize how f*cking amazing it would be to have Breen singing that. What I mean is, to do virtually the same thing as done with this, only to that song with Breen singing. And no, I understand that if he does this, he'll have to do ones for every request people make and then his life would be dedicated to feeding the needs of anxious music/hl2 fans - - BUT, ANYONE who hears this song and ESPECIALLY pays attention to the lyrics would easily understand that the lyrics could've come straight from Breen's mouth within the game itself. And the song has more of a talk-singing feel to it, which would be less weird.(ITS NOT RAP) Anyway, if he doesn't want to do this, which I would understand, someone else HAS TO take a shot at it - - go check out the song and ya'll know what I'm talking about.
Again, f*cking awesomely well done video - even if it's kinda funny to see the gman singing. . . . . holy sh*t this is a long comment.

I have added this to the Valve News site (http://collective.valve-erc.com), I hope you don't mind.

There is a very well done interview with Yahn Bernier on the VERC regarding Source and Machinima that Chris Bokitch did.

Regardless, as a model editor and now just recently getting into choreography and phonemes with Source Face Poser. I must say, after a month of so of tinkering.. its hard enough to get a model structure to speak a full sentence with simple gestures and expressions....let alone sing and entire song with realistic expressions.

Keep up the good work Paul!

Fantastic video, the whole thing is filmed and cut to perfection. Personally I think it would of been more suited for Barney to be singing rather than G-Man. But still its fantastic and i've been showing all my friends.

Hope you win a machinima award for this.

That was one of the best choreographies I've seen yet. The attention to detail was amazing. I could never figure out demoui, so all of my own creations always turned out bad. :/

Just to add, if you don't want to use Fraps (for higher capturing resolution, etc.), you can record a demo, edit it with demoui, then do host_framerate 30; playdemo [name]; startmovie [name], once it's done playing do endmovie. Then use Bink tools to compile the targas into an AVI. It takes longer, but ends up making it more flexible when editing it all...

I had lip sync problems in mplayer on Linux/gentoo with the high-res WMV. I assume it's a problem with the mplayer codec, but if you did anything out-of-the-ordinary with the video/audio, you might want to tweak it the next time you're rendering.

Dude, you should ask valve to let you make a trailer for them for the upcoming Halflife2:Aftermath expansion pack. I'm surprised why Valve didn't grab this opportunity while they were helping you out with G-man issues. God damnit, this is one nice effort, maybe not perfect but very close. Whoever has seen this video at my place says, what an awesome music video. That sums it up well I suppose.

One word - un-be-fucking-lieveable. Personally, i loved the song choice. The beat is perfect for a game like HL2, and the lyrics actually somewhat relate if you think about it. The long instrumental parts allowed for great action shots, which you executed BRILLIANTLY, and the best part of all... the G-Man headbanging at the end! That was excellent! And insanely hilarious since headbanging is the last thing i would expect him to do lol... Incredible job!

I actually have the video running in the background as I write this post. For the one person that I saw that said it was weird seeing the G Man sing it, I think he was the perfect character for something like this. With this video you really see how well the lip-syncing works with the HL2 engine. I have to watch this vid at least a couple times a day.

It would be awesome to more videos like this. The HL2 engine is the best engine to date.

All the G Man parts were done with Face Poser which is in Source SDK.

I don't know if Paul Marino checks these comments but I sent him an email and he hasn’t replied back in like 2 weeks or so. The main question I wanted to know was what were the computer specs that were used to play the game and make the video? If you could get back to me that would be awesome. You can reach me at madskillsmark@gmail.com

This video is AWESOME!!! Played HL2 all the way through so its like a musical Trailer of the game plot. It is simply that well done. It actually made me go out and buy the Breaking Benjamin CD since the song is ingrained in my head with that awesome game that is HL2(The CD itself is great too and worth a listen through. I bought it sight on scene when I heard the rest in addition to 'So Cold') The lyrics fit the plot to a 'T' and the mood is perfect. Cuts are straight Hollywood. Makes me want to see HL 2 the movie with this as the music video! (P.S. You should get this on MTV2 on Video Mods ASAP!!!!)

It's very good. I'm interesed in becoming an animator in gameing and I know how hard it is to animate something like that. I beat Half Life 2 between the first time I saw this and this time. Dude, sweet video.

On that topic, I think that it would be great if you made a video for the song "Breakdown", also by Breaking Benjamin. I think it would work best if based around Ravenholm. Now, I know that you probably won't do it, but at least I made the suggestion

I just wanted to say that this video is great, though I am a bit disappointed that you cut off the part at the beginning where Breen is talking and giving his speech about the human repoduction.

Unquestionably some of the finest work I've ever seen.

I do have to say, I prefer the beginning of the original though. It led you into the story better.

    IMHO :)

I agree, I like version 1.1 better. This one is just 1.1 without the opening speech by Dr. Breen. But, I really love this video. I've had it saved on my computer for like almost a year I guess, and I pull it out and watch it probably twice a month. Awesome video!

I'm lost for words, what you have done is truly astonishing. Half-Life 2 has never been this cool! Although I think the Gman didn't fit the singer's voice, everything else was just plain bloody excellent. Pat yourself on the back, you've made something truly special.

I was just wondering how you got the lip syncing to work whitout a clean vocla track. did you get one somehow from the artist or did you do it manually in faceposer?

You can make videos like these using Garrys mod aka GMOD but to get it to this standard you need to spend alot of time searching for atension to detail

Please thinkin about posting a HQ version in something other than WMV. While mplayer can play it under linux, the reverse-eng-support for WMV has audio-sync problems, which really doesn't show off all your hard work.

If I could realllly dream, something like a 720p or 1080i version would be even cooler for those of us who like to show this off on our bigscreens.

Hello, great video you have here!

Please, consider posting in anothe format for 640x480 resolution besides WMV.

WMV is not well supported under Linux - yet alone legally.

    Might you consider Ogg Theora?

This is one of the best movies that has ever been crafted by a mere mortal. Awesome to see that my favorite song from "we are not alone" has been used in an movie as awesome as this one.

Breaking benjamin was my favorite band anyway.
