Valve's Left 4 Dead may have Machinima hooks
Right from Kotaku: Valve's Doug Lombardi took a few minutes out of a busy E3 schedule to talk a bit about Left 4 Dead - Valve's zombie opus due for release in November. Beyond the usual can't-wait-to-see-what-Valve-is-up-to-ness, Lombardi explains in this interview that they're considering a movie mod post release...

More and more game developers are considering Machinima options for their games -and why not? Videos made from the games only serve as additional exposure of their product to those who might not otherwise see it.

Cooool. Very neat indeed.
Thanks, Paul. I second Hugh's "neat" and raise you a "cool". Valve has superb (if difficult) tools, so whatever they come up with should be interesting.
Of course, it would be nice if they released some kind of usage agreement too. I'm distinctly wary about engines without that these days (not that I wouldn't use them, but I probably wouldn't recommend them).
Very true, Hugh. I would think if Valve included such machinima options as part of their game, that some language would surface supporting the content generated (even if it was a small extract of the MS/Blizz language).
I share your desire for Valve to release a machinima usage agreement, but we've all been waiting for years for it to happen. Considering the experience of John Griggs with "Deviation" (he created a protest video with only audio because Valve wouldn't respond to him), I don't think Valve is going to provide any kind of usage agreement in the near future, although I remain hopeful as they are generally friendly towards the mod community.
Frankly, I think the game companies lack of foresight in trying to work with the machinima community is what's driving some filmmakers to non-game programs like IClone, Moviestorm and Antics.
Did anyone hear about what I believe Valve went on talking about a 'steam movies' website? Basically, a website like their steam community, but for user made videos. Maybe the two will conjoin in the future. And hopefully any movie-making related updates apply to the whole HL2/source/episode engine and not just Left for Dead! Thanks for the find.
